Getting used to sleeping with a CPAP can be frustrating at first, but with a little patience you’ll find that your sleep greatly improves with consistent use of your CPAP machine.

GEM SLEEP has put together this guide to help new CPAP patients get used to their device and get the most out of sleep apnea therapy.

Ten practical tips to maximize your CPAP benefits

Once you receive your CPAP machine and get it set up, you’ll want to try it out and see how it feels. Here are our top ten “CPAP hacks” to help you make the most of your experience.

1. Use Distilled Water

Opt for distilled water to prevent mineral buildup and extend the lifespan of your CPAP components.

2. Prioritize Mask Comfort

If your mask feels uncomfortable, try a different mask type to find one that suits your needs.  There are several types of masks so do your research. The GEM SLEEP team can help you find the mask that fits you best.

Be sure to change out your mask at least every six months to make sure your therapy is as effective as possible.

3. Address Air Leakage

If you notice air leakage, check the cushions and headgear for wear, and replace equipment promptly.

4. Adjust Air Pressure

If your machine seems to be putting out too much pressure, try turning it off and then back on. It may have ramped up while you were sleeping because of a leak in your mask.

5. Combat Dryness

If you are experiencing nasal or mouth dryness, you may need to adjust the humidity and tube temperature on your machine.

If your eyes are feeling dry, you may need to change your cushion, or wear a sleep eye mask to prevent the air leaking into your eyes.

6. Practice Wearing Your CPAP

If you are having trouble getting used to your machine, practice wearing your mask during relaxing day time activities, such as watching tv, reading a book or even during a nap.

7. Invest in a CPAP Pillow

Enhance comfort during CPAP use with a specialized pillow featuring side cut-outs and hose tethers. Ask your GEM SLEEP coach for guidance.

8. Use a CPAP Hose Hanger

Eliminate hose-related disruptions by using a hose hanger or draping the hose over your headboard for convenience.

9. Leverage Ramp-Up Pressure

Take advantage of the ramp feature on your CPAP machine to gradually adjust pressure levels as you fall asleep, which can minimize discomfort.

10. Clean Your CPAP

Just like clean sheets, a clean CPAP is essential to a good night’s sleep. Cleaning your CPAP regularly helps prevent bacteria, allergens and germs from building up in your hose, keeping you healthier and well rested.
